The Russian Monarchy
The history of Saint-Petersburg goes back to 1703,
the time when tzar Peter 1 - the great reformer
and the first emperor of Russia - laid down the
first stone of the Peter and Paul Fortress. He was
not planning to build an ordinary city, his intentions
were to construct the capital of Russia. Thus it
could be easily called his dream city. Many foreign
architects came to Saint-Petersburg to create the
image of a strong and at the same time beautiful
and up-to-date capital of one of the greatest states
of the world. And after that throughout many years
Saint-Petersburg together with its famous suburbs:
Peterhof, Tsarskoye Selo (Pushkin), Pavlovsk and
Gatchyna turned into a splendid aristocratic ensemble.
The imperial Saint-Petersburg and its excellent
satellites (the former residencies of Russian tzars)
are rich in magnificent palaces which strike one's
imagination especially nowadays. Those buildings
amaze with their decor and ornamentation made of
rare precious materials. Today they are considered
to be priceless. And so we are happy that all these
cultural monuments survived up to our time and we
all have the opportunity to enjoy their splendor
and beauty. |
